Call for Applications: YSI-EBHS Doctoral Workshop, May 28, 2025

YSI-EBHS Doctoral Workshop

The Young Scholars Initiative (YSI), in collaboration with the Economic and Business History Society (EBHS), will hold a doctoral workshop for around 6 doctoral students on Wednesday, May 28, in Birmingham, AL, USA. The aim of this one-day workshop is to support the career and research development as well as networking of new scholars in the fields of economic and business history, broadly conceived. The workshop will include paper development presentations by doctoral students, followed by feedback and discussion with the leadership of the EBHS, as well as mentorship panels on academic publishing, the academic job-market, and career development in economic and business history.

If selected for participation, doctoral students will receive:

  • ​$150 of financial support for travel to and from Birmingham, AL;
  • 2nights of accommodation for the evenings of May 27 and May 28
  • automatic paper acceptance for the EBHS conference (those already accepted to present at EBHS are also encouraged to apply).

The workshop is open to applications from doctoral students across the world undertaking a PhD in the fields of economic and business history, broadly conceived. This includes research in management, financial, labor, legal, and social history, including the history of capitalism and economic thought. The EBHS is committed to diversity and inclusion, and we especially encourage applications from doctoral students from underrepresented groups.

Applications should be received no later than Friday, April 11, 2025. Applications will be considered by the YSI organizers and leadership of the EBHS. If you have already submitted an abstract for the EBHS Conference in Birmingham you may still apply for this doctoral workshop and are encouraged to do so. Please note that if you attended the YSI-EBHS doctoral workshops in York in June 2024, Porto in May 2023, or Salt Lake City in May 2022, you are eligible to apply for the 2025 workshop.

The 50th Annual Conference of the Economic and Business History Society (EBHS) will be held May 29-31, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama. Celebrating half a century of promoting research, this year’s theme, “Forging New Frontiers,” invites scholars to explore how economies, firms, and industries have adapted to change across historical periods.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Robert K. Fleck (Clemson University) as our keynote speaker. His research spans political economy, economic history, and development economics, focusing on the causes and consequences of major political and economic transitions.

Proposals for individual papers or panels on any aspect of economic and business history are welcome.

Call for Papers deadline extended (DL Feb. 17)!

The Economic and Business History Society (EBHS) is proud to announce its 50th annual conference, to be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 29-31, 2025. As we mark half a century of pioneering interdisciplinary research, we invite scholars to explore the theme of “Forging New Frontiers” in economic and business history.

We welcome papers and panels examining how economies, businesses, industries, and markets have demonstrated resilience by adapting their strategies, structures, and practices in response to catalysts for change across all historical eras. The conference committee will consider proposals on any aspect of economic and business history, broadly construed.

Rober K. Fleck, EBHS 2025 keynote

We are also pleased to announce our keynote speaker, Dr. Robert Fleck, Professor of Economics at Clemson University. Dr. Fleck’s main fields of interest include political economy, public finance, economic history, law and economics, and development economics. Much of his current research focuses on the causes and consequences of major political and economic transitions and on why only some countries adopt successful political and economic reforms.

Additionally, this year’s conference fees are listed below:

  • Early Bird Registration (registered before April 15): $325
  • Full Registration (registered after April 15): $400
  • Early Scholar (Ph.D. earned within 5 years): $275
  • Graduate Student: $150

Registration will open beginning early spring.

Birmingham, known as “The Pittsburgh of the South,” provides a unique backdrop for our theme. From its 1871 founding as a planned industrial center, the city rapidly grew into a world-leading producer of pig iron, steel, and coal, driving the New South’s post-Reconstruction manufacturing boom. Yet Birmingham also holds an indelible place in the civil rights movement, whose campaigns challenged racial injustices constraining economic opportunities.  Thus, we also encourage proposals analyzing how the interlinked social, political, and economic spheres reshaped the frontier of civil rights and its societal and economic impacts.

In recent years, Birmingham has undergone a remarkable renaissance, emerging as one of the New South’s most vibrant cultural and culinary hubs. With seven James Beard Award-winning restaurants and a thriving arts scene, the city offers a perfect blend of historical significance and modern dynamism.

The conference will be based at the Hilton at UAB hotel, ideally situated in the heart of downtown Birmingham. This location puts attendees just steps away from the city’s award-winning culinary scene and minutes from major attractions. The hotel is offering a special conference rate of $159 per night.

The extended deadline for paper and panel proposals is February 17, 2025. Submissions should include:

  • The title of the presentation
  • An abstract of no more than 500 words
  • 3-5 Keywords
  • Contact details for each presenter
